On the boardwalk in Atlantic City in 1937
Let's take a walk on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, courtesy of the nice people who scanned in this photo, the Duke University. I found it on a site that they have that's dedicated to historic advertising, called ROAD (Resource of Outdoor Advertising Descriptions) which I like, and mostly I like looking at the locations, and the people. Let's walk around!
Since it's 1937, Prohibition has been over for four years, so you don't have to hide your flask. No, none for me, thank you! I'm just gonna look around. You know, I never noticed before that the Sherwin-Williams paint must have tipped the earth sideways!
I can't quite see what time it is - do you have any interest in seeing the Deep Sea Fish Net Haul at the Million Dollar Pier? No? Me, neither. How about the Baby Incubators? No? Then let's just people-watch!
Actually, I think that we're being watched. See that guy with the cigarette? And look at that couple in the smoked glasses! Looks like the women are holding on tightly to their pocketbooks. Must be a pickpocket problem around here!
I gotta admit that there are some sharp-dressed people here today on the boardwalk. Those straw hats sure are popular! I'm trying to figure out how old the couple on the right is? If they're in their late 70s, they were children during the Civil War. How much the world must have changed for them! Electricity, horseless carriages, the prohibition of liquor, and then repeal. How about that? Yeah, I guess I will have a snort after all!
