Visiting Trenton, New Jersey in 1947

Let's time-travel back to 1947 and go to Trenton, New Jersey. I found this image on the Duke University website, and with the help of my top history adventurer, who prefers to remain anonymous, I've identified it as Broad Street and Front looking north.

Most of the buildings in this photo are gone, but the church is still there, and way in the background is the Trenton Battle Monument, which is also still there. But mostly my eye is caught by MacHenry's.

It looks like MacHenry's is just the store I need. It's 1947, the war is over, and I could use some nice new civilian duds. I'm thinking that a three-piece would look good on me, maybe with one of those Dunhill hats! And yes, I see that you're looking at the beauty shop. While I'm getting fitted, you could go get some eyebrow arching, or hair bleaching, or finger waving, and even a scientific scalp treatment! The entrance is over to the left. Say hello to May and Betty for me!

When we're done, we can call Capitol Cab and have them pick us up at the Polk Building. I'm sure they're know where it is, it's been there since 1881!

Or maybe we could go over to the RKO Capitol and see the Gene Kelly picture "Living in a Big Way". What's that? You want to go take a closer look at the Battle Monument? Sure! But let's take a cab, it's farther away than it looks!

Thank you for visiting Trenton in 1947 with me!
