California life at its best - in Chevy Chase in the 1920s
When I saw this billboard at the Duke site today, I have to admit that I was taken aback. To me, Chevy Chase is an actor, and it never occurred to me that there would be a place with that name. There is, and it's in Glendale, California.
It's been there since the 1920s, and I really know nothing about it. My first question for you locals is how it's pronounced, is it "Shevvy" (like the car) or "Chevvy" (like the actor)? I suppose if Bert Farrar was still around I could ask him, but since it's been almost 100 years since this community was established I'd imagine that he is no longer with us, or would be too old to remember it correctly, and explain it to us.
Here it is on Google maps, just off the 134 and the 2. Looks like there's a Chevy Chase Country Club, which is what must be pictured in the billboard. It's on Chevy Chase Drive, of course. I suppose if I went there I could ask, and maybe someone there could explain all of this to me, but I don't get to California much anymore.
Looks like it's a nice community, probably pretty pricey! I wonder if you can still ride horses around there? Fore!
