Driving around Phoenix, Arizona in 1968

In this imaginary journey, inspired by the nice people at Duke University, who scanned this photo, we're going to Phoenix, Arizona in 1968. We're crossing the railroad tracks on Grand Avenue at McDowell, looking southeast.

I've decided to be the guy in the Mustang, wearing the sunglasses. Looks like I have out-of-state plates, so chances are that I don't have a Valley Bank account. Looks like there's some road construction! Yep, this is Phoenix!

Since it's 1968, there's the original location for Six Points Hardware. Yes, this intersection is called Six Points, and it's because you can go in six different directions from here, on Grand, on 19th Avenue, and on McDowell. There's Grand Avenue Motors, which people from the 21st Century will still recognize.

I suppose that I could take the Mustang to the Aamco, and get the free multi-check, but it's running fine. I think I'll keep driving on Grand Avenue, maybe all of the way to Glendale. Sorry I can't stop and take you with me - I've got places to go, and things to do! Double A - beep-beep - MCO!
