Relaxing on the beach in 1937 in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Let's time-travel back to 1937, and go relax on the beach in Atlantic City. Yes, I know that I'm supposed to use the term "shore", but I'm from California, so you have to cut me some slack. Anyway, let's go!

This photo, by the way, is from the Duke University site ROAD (Resource of Outdoor Advertising Descriptions). Their interest is in the billboards, mine is in the people!

Here we are, that's me there. No, not the guy on the left with the biceps, the one on the right in the hat, talking. That guy being admired by the pretty girl might you, or you might be sitting there listening to me yammering on, and on... Presumably I'm talking about things were so much better back before the war. Of course, I'm not saying "World War I" because World War II hadn't happened yet. I may refer to it as "The Great War", or the "War to End All Wars", but I'd probably just say "the war. Pre-war whiskey is much better!

It's a nice day, and there sure are a lot of people here. Some are even under the boardwalk! I can almost taste the hotdogs and french fries they sell!

  1. All the NJ beaches are located in towns on what are called "barrier islands". So, when you're headed there you're going "down the shore". When you're on the islands you are "down the shore", but you still have to go "to the beach" (some say boardwalk)!

So the term is accurate if you are "down the shore"!

    1. Thanks, Captain! I just love the beach, even if I can only go in my imagination!
