We visit the Colonial Restaurant in 1938, Trenton, New Jersey

I'm hungry, and I'd like to get something to eat at the Colonial Restaurant in Trenton, New Jersey in 1938. Sure you can come along!

This image, by the way, is from the Duke University site ROAD (Resource of Outdoor Advertising Descriptions) which is there because they study historic advertising (yeah, that's a thing!). Me, I just like time-traveling, and you can come along if you want to, and you behave yourself. OK?

Here we are, at Broad and the Railroad tracks, which is Feeder Street. Since we're from the 21st Century, you'd better let me do the talking. You almost got us in trouble last time, remember? Follow me.

Look! There's the waitress behind the counter. She looks like a friendly girl. Just smile and nod, don't say a word, I'll do the talking. You might slip up and order a gluten-free muffin or something. Shhhh!

Howdy ma'am! Much obliged! We sure are hungry! What's that, sit anywhere? Hows about we sit here at the counter with you?

Where are we from? Arizona! Yes, my friend can talk, he just doesn't much care to. Oh, and I'm sorry, I didn't know that it was "Miss". No offence taken I hope. Yes, two coffees. What? No, my friend didn't say "Splenda", he said "splendid"! Yes, sugar would be splendid.

That's a mighty fine rig parked out there! No, we don't have a car, we walked here. All of the way from Arizona, yes. No, we're not tramps, but truth be told we got no money. But we can set our hands to anything. No, my friend didn't say that he could build a website, he said that he could build a bridge. He stutters.

Well, that's mighty kind of you, mighty kind! Of course we can chop some firewood, and my friend here wouldn't mind going up onto the roof to catch a few rats. He'd be proud to do it, mighty proud.

You sure are a pretty girl! What time do you get off? That's fine. My friend here? Yeah, we can wait until he's up in the attic with the rats, maybe take in a show somewhere. Why thank you, you have nice eyes, too.
